이 논문은 칸트의 도덕철학에서 인간성이 어떤 의미를 갖는가를 밝히고자 한다. 인간성에 관한 논의는 칸트 도덕철학 전반에 걸쳐 언급된 중요한 주제 중 하나이다.『도덕 형이상학 정초』제2장에 세 개의 논증들이 있다. 이들 각각의 논증들은 정언명법이 정식화 될 수 있는 새로운 용어를 이끌고 있다. 이들 논증을 요약하면, 보편성은 도덕법칙의 형식을 주고, 이성적 본성 또는 인간성은 목적 자체로서 우리에게 법칙의 실질을 준다. 그리고 목적의 왕국에서 자율적 입법은 준칙의 완전한 규정과 목적의 전체성을 표현한다. 특히 보편성이 원리의 적절한 형식인 것처럼 인간성은 이성적 원리를 위해 적절한 실질인 것으로 주장된다. 더 나아가 자율의 이념은『실천이성비판』에로 전이를 가능하게 할 징검다리를 제공하고 도덕의 형이상학으로 한 단계 더 진전된 것을 표현한다. 따라서 무엇보다도 인간성과 관련된 논의를 중점적으로 다룰 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper, I make clear what the meaning of humanity is in Kant's moral philosophy. The argument of humanity is a matter of important themes mentioned over the whole field of Kant's moral philosophy. The Second Section of the Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals contains three arguments. Each of these arguments leads to a new set of terms in which the categorical imperative can be formulated. In summarizing these arguments, Kant tells us that universality gives us the form of the moral law; rational nature or humanity as an end in itself gives us the material of the law; and autonomous legislation in a kingdom of ends represents a complete determination of maxims and a totality of ends. In particular, humanity is argued to be the appropriate material for a rational principle, just as universality is its appropriate form. Furthermore, the addition of each new feature represents a step further into the metaphysics of morals, with the idea of autonomy providing the stepping-stone that will make the transition to a critique of practical reason possible. I am concerned with the argument for the Formula of Humanity.
