Abstract
Kinnara-Kinnari is a half-man, half-bird iconography with bird wings attached to a human body. It's not unlike the image of an angel in Christianity. On the other hand, the Kalavinka, which does also appear in East Asia where Mahayana Buddhism was practiced, is not much different in image from the Kinnara. At first glance, it's not surprising that they share the same image. In general, the iconography of mythological beings is usually realized in sculptures, reliefs, paintings (or murals) by artisans who refer to the descriptions in the texts to depict them. Although there are obviously differences in the way they are represented in different regions, the iconography that is authentic has become normative, and the norms of the image linger on constantly even when it is transmitted to other regions. Surprisingly, however, there is no mention of physical appearance in the original texts of the apparitions of Kinnara-Kinnari and Kalavinka. It is interesting to note that both beings are similarly portrayed as half-human, half-bird, and in fact it is not easy to clearly distinguish between the two. While the existence of Kalavinka is well known in East Asia, Kinnara-Kinnari has a similar image in Southeast Asia, but they are two different entities. Therefore, this article aims to explore the religious texts, iconographic representations, and interrelations of the two entities that present similar images, and finally, how the iconographic relations and image vicissitudes of the two entities have been achieved.
