Abstract
This text was set off from a question on the unknown backgrounds of the rare appearance of various transforming animal icons, those which appear frequently on the early stupa ornaments, in the ornamental relief depicting Buddha‘s life on Gandhara stupas. First, the types of transforming animal icons found on Buddhist sculptures in India and Gandhara weer examined, and for India, transforming animal icons were used frequently as ornaments while makara was particularly preferred. For Gandhara, transforming animal icons were rarely found but, ketos icon is found on many bodhisattva statues. The reason why transforming animal icons, those which are used frequently in India, appear rarely in Gandhara was found from the time when the early stupas in India were built and the time when pagodas in Buddhist temples became popular. The makara on Indian Buddhist sculptures were: firstly, viewed as a symbol and an expedient of the great power of Buddha salvaging the mankind; and secondly, understood as an icon created by combining the mythical idea of India, in which Brahma born from the lotus flower that bloomed on the navel of Visnu, with the Jataka tales. The makara icon that brings up a stem of flowers, in particular, was interpreted as a motif expressing the preaching of Buddha during the pre-iconic phase. While makara is the symbol of Buddha during the pre-iconic phase, ketos is a motif that was adopted on the ornamental relief depicting Buddha’s life after the pre-iconic phase. It is thought that the greek elements in Gandhara Buddhist art such as the greek capitals and columns in temples and the Westernized masks and drapes on bodhisattva statues had caused the introduction of ketos as a motif equivalent to makara in India. Such hybridism of cultures caused by the geographical background of Gandhara that stands on the crossroad of Asia is thought to have been an effective means of propagation for the locals with multiethnic backgrounds. The significance of transforming animal icons on Buddhist sculptures lies in the point that they are created as a combination of Buddhism and public acceptance(makara) and that they are the product of cultural exchange between Buddhists and greeks(ketos).
