Abstract

This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationships among self-concept clarity, self-reflection, and professional identity in counselors. Participants were 163 novice counselors with less than five years of counseling experience, and data were collected at three time points. The data were analyzed using an auto-regressive cross-lagged model. The main findings are as follows. First, all three variables of self-concept clarity, self-reflection, and professional identity-showed significant autoregressive effects, indicating stability over time. Second, in the cross-lagged effects, self-reflection consistently and positively predicted both self-concept clarity and professional identity. In contrast, the direct paths between self-concept clarity and self-reflection, and between self-concept clarity and professional identity, were mostly insignificant or inconsistent. Third, in the longitudinal mediation analysis, self-concept clarity at Time 1 predicted professional identity at Time 3 through partial mediation by self-reflection at Time 2, whereas the reverse mediation path was insignificant. These results suggest that self-reflection serves as a key mechanism linking self-concept clarity and professional identity in the developmental process of counselors.
