Abstract
Youth and older adults differ in their key life tasks and characteristics, raising concerns that patterns of social isolation may also differ. Nevertheless, limited research has compared the characteristics of social isolation between these two groups. This study aims to compare and analyze research trends on social isolation among youth and older adults and propose directions for future research. A scoping review was conducted on 122 academic articles published between 2016 and 2024. The main findings are as follows. First, studies on both age groups showed a steady increase over time, with a sharp rise in research on youth between 2023 and 2024. Second, most studies focused on the general population within each age group. Third, quantitative methods predominated across both groups. Studies on older adults have utilized diverse methodologies since earlier stages than studies on youth. Fourth, mental health and social relationships/family were common themes in both groups. However, research on youth more frequently addressed topics related to digital/technology and poverty/asset issues, while studies on older adults focused more on welfare/care/policy and health. Fifth, social isolation was generally conceptualized in either objective or subjective terms across both groups. Sixth, psychological factors were commonly identified as key causes of social isolation, with physical and environmental factors more frequently highlighted in studies on older adults. Lastly, psychological consequences were the most frequently examined outcomes in both groups. Research on youth mainly addressed emotional and mental health outcomes such as depression and life satisfaction, whereas studies on older adults included a broader range of outcomes, including physical health and healthrelatedbehaviors. Notably, a significant association between social isolation and subjective health was consistently reported in older adults, while no causal relationship was established in studies on young adults. Based on these findings, this study suggests future research should diversify study populations, methodologies, and topics, adopt multidimensional approaches, and promote empirical investigations of the mechanisms of social isolation.
