초록
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of elementary school students toward a child who relies on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Method: Participants included 379 third through sixth grade students from two regular elementary schools in a city in South Korea. Three different experimental videos were recorded of a child using AAC while interacting with her mother. The participants were divided into three groups: one group watched the child using unaided AAC, another group watched the child using a communication board, and the last group watched the child using a speech generating device (SGD). A 2 (age)×2 (gender)×3 (AAC type) ANCOVA was calculated. Results: Findings indicated that the attitude of the participants was generally neutral: girls expressed more positive attitudes than boys, younger students were more positive than older ones, and attitudes were more positive when the child used a communication board or an SGD than unaided AAC. Conclusion: The results were discussed based on three factors; affective/ behavioral attitudes, cognitive attitudes, and the attitudes about communicative competence of the child using AAC.
