Abstract

This study was conducted to address attitude of middle school students toward an autistic student using Augmentative and Alternative Communication(AAC) to supply basic data for inclusive education in middle schools. The subjects were 368 students from 12 classes in 1st and 3rd grades from two national middle schools in C city, Gyeongnam. Research was complemented after the subjects watched one of the videos viewing autistic students using unaided AAC and voice output AAC. The results are as follows. First, total attitude of middle school students’ toward an autistic student using AAC was below average more positive in girls than in boys, and more positive in voice-output AAC than in, unaided AAC. Second, emotional and behavioral attitude toward an autistic student using AAC was more positive in girls than in boys, in 3rd grade than in 1st grade, and in voice output AAC than in unaided AAC. Third, there were no meaningful differences in gender and grade in perceptional attitude toward an autistic student using AAC. Perceptional attitude was more positive in voice output AAC than in unaided AAC. Fourth, communicative attitude of middle school students toward an autistic student using AAC was higher level in girls than in boys, and in voice output AAC than in unaided AAC.
