영성 생태론: ‘살아 있는 지구’ 가설의 철학적 토대

영성이란 본래 어떤 사람의 내면적 성찰을 가리키는 정신적 태도를 가리키는 개념이고, 생태론은 인간이 자연환경과 관계하는 방식을 다루는 학문을 이르는 이름이다. 이와 같이 내면적 성찰을 통해 일상생활 속에서 지구를 대하는 우리의 관계방식, 즉 인간이 자연을 억압하는 ‘지배의 윤리’가 아니라 인간을 자연의 한 구성요소로 보는 ‘동반자의 윤리’로 거듭나게 해 줄 것이라는 믿음이 곧 영성 생태론의 입론이다. 오늘날 전지구적 규모의 환경오염과 생태계 파괴에 직면하여 자연 그 자체를 하나의 생명체로 보아야 한다는 새로운 반성이 생겨났고, 이에 영성 생태론은 개인의 의식변화를 촉구하고 사회운동을 새로운 양식으로 이끌어가기 위한 강력한 느낌과 동기를 만들어내는 데 기여했다. 이른바 ‘녹색정치’ 운동과 ‘에코페미니즘’ 운동의 태동이 그것이다. 그러나 여기서 녹색정치나 에코페미니즘의 활동에 관해 언급하는 것은 무의미하다. 이들 생태운동은 생태적 인식의 위기에 직면하여 근본적인 패러다임의 전환을 요구한다는 공통점을 지니고 있는데, 아래서 우리는 이러한 인식의 위기를 불러온 고전 물리학의 한계와 이 한계에 도전하는 현대 물리학의 특징(2장), 특히 상대성이론과 양자론의 근본 특징과 동양 신비주의 사이의 상보성에 의한 과학의 영성 파악(3장), 궁극적으로 이러한 영성을 드러내는 ‘살아 있는 지구’의 자기 조절 능력(4장)에 관해 살펴본다.
Abstract
This thesis is a study on the spiritual attitude that has influence upon natural ecosystem of the earth. This spiritual attitude reflects on the global environmental pollution that is resulted from the industrialization and capitalization in the modern times, and it contributes to the establishment of social campaign to keep the earth safe from ecological crisis. So this spiritual attitude helps us construct a relationship between man and nature in the ordinary life. To establish this attitude, we have to examine the limits of classical physics and understand the characteristics of modern physics, especially the theory of relativity and quantum theory(ch. 2). And then we need to reflect on the relation between modern western science and classical eastern mysticism, especially Hinduism, Taoism, and Zen Buddhism(ch. 3). Finally we inquire into the self regulation ability of 'a living earth' hypothesis(ch. 4), from which we think the spiritual ecology is well explained.
