Abstract
This study attempts to infer the specific economic operating principles of the for-tress-centered ‘state-operated pottery production-distribution system’ and the settle-ment-centered ‘private pottery production-distribution system’, which have been identified through the distribution patterns of Unified Silla pottery in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions. The state system of Unified Silla pottery operated primarily around fortress sites and state- run pottery workshops, typified by the Sadang-dong site in Seoul; it is characterized by centralized production at a limited number of hubs, wide-area distribution, and exclusive allocation. In contrast, the private system represents a localized mode of production and distribution, characterized by self-sufficient production and consumption at the level of in- dividual settlements. The most explicit variance between the two distribution systems lies in their spatial scope of distribution, which can be interpreted as the outcome of a complex interplay of multiple variables, including raw material procurement, the inherent physical properties of pottery, social value, transportation infrastructure, and modes of production and exchange. Ultimately, this divergence is deemed to have been determined by the capacity of each eco- nomic agent to absorb pottery transportation costs. The state system reflects the results of actively utilizing national water transport infrastructure to offset rising logistics costs from long-distance movement, thereby achieving economies of scale through centralized pro- duction hubs. Conversely, the private system is understood as a localized strategy wherein individual settlements independently procured pottery through part-time potters in close proximity to consumption sites, aiming to minimize transport costs and the risk of damage for bulky and heavy everyday vessels.
