Abstract

This study theoretically examines the genre of picturebooks of poetry, where poetry and images interact complementarily to convey meaning, and it explores the aesthetic characteristics of these picturebooks, focusing on the concept of ‘boundary.’ As a hybrid text combining poetry and images, picturebooks of poetry construct meaning through the interaction between words and illustrations. Although formally classified as a subcategory of picturebooks, picturebooks of poetry feature segmented scenes that are sequentially developed due to the physical characteristics of the picturebook medium. In these books, a unified image emerges within the boundary of each ‘scene,’ where poetry and images are combined, and these scenes are sequentially connected to form an overall meaning. When a poetic text is transformed into a picturebook of poetry, the reader experiences a hybrid text within the boundary of each scene, where poetry and images merge, thereby enabling a literary experience in which the aesthetics of the moment are maximized. Additionally, as the individual scenes of the picturebook are sequentially connected according to the grammar of the picturebook, the reader perceives a sense of narrative flow over time. Thus, in picturebooks of poetry, boundaries within individual scenes maximize lyricism, while the process of connecting scenes establishes a sense of narrative, resulting in a unique aesthetic feature. In the context of literary education, learners experience a distinctive literary experience by engaging with both the strategy of marking boundaries and that of linking boundaries, as implemented by a skilled picturebook artist who interprets poetic texts. This process enables learners to simultaneously experience lyrical and narrative qualities, allowing them to explore more fluid and layered interpretations beyond the singular interpretation of a poetic text. The boundary aesthetics of picturebooks of poetry hold significant educational value by providing learners with expanded literary experiences.
