Abstract
In the early 1960s, the collision between the 'Atlantic Europe' and the 'European Europe' was aggravated by the problem of the British entry into the EEC. Italy is known as a country that most opposed to de Gaulle and favoured the British adhesion to the EEC, backing up the prospect of the Atlantic Europe. But this research represents that the position and attitude taken by Italy towards the problem during this period was different from the general valuation. Until the middle of 1960, Italy did not pay great attention to the entry of the G.B in the EEC. Though favouring the Atlantic Europe, Italy limited to express her support for th G.B. When he got the power, Fanfani tried to approach to the G.B., because he wanted to show his people a diplomatic success. This was very important for him who wanted to open his government to the Left. And the prospect of the Franco-German axis forced him to go to the G.B. But he still supported the French project for the political union, because he noticed that the project could be an useful instrument towards an European political integration. Though this attitude, he tried to put the prospect of tight relationship between Europe and the Atlantic World into the work for the Fouchet Plan. When he had known that the French project could not be realized and de Gaulle was trying to build up an axis with Adenauer, he turned to the G. B. opposing to the French. So, in this research we can see that Italy favoured the Atlantic Europe opposing de Gaulle, but he did not want to reject the French idea. But when he was forced to choose, he took the Atlantic Europe.
