Abstract

This paper examines the main arguments of Speculative Realism and Graham Harman's object-oriented ontology (OOO) in relation to ancient East Asian thought and modern physics, such as relativity and quantum mechanics, in order to critically reflect on the anthropocentrism that has dominated modern philosophy since Kant. The main points of the four chapters of this paper are described as below. Chapter 2, “The Spread of Speculative Realism,” sequentially introduces the theories of Quentin Meillassoux , Ray Brassier, and Iain Hamilton Grant, the main members of speculative realism, and the object-oriented ontology of Graham Harman and Timothy Morton, its current representative. The first two are scientific realists, the latter three are humanistic realists. Chapter 3, “Comparison of Speculative Realism and East Asian Thought,” considers the similarities and differences between the these. From the similarities, we can extract the features of (1) de-anthropocentrism and de-dichotomy, and (2) non-literalism of metaphors and allusions to Reality. The following ‘Review Points' critically evaluated (1) the scale of perception of the world, (2) a comparison of Eastern and Western ontology: about reductionism and the problem of reality, and (3) the problem of sensual contact of objects. Chapter 4, ‘A Scientific Philosophical Review of Objectivity,' critically examines the problem of ‘objecthood' as a property of objects, which is also a core concept of OOO, from the perspective of quantum mechanics and ancient East Asian thoughts. In particular, it examined the problem of (1) the principle of Uncertainty Principle in quantum mechanics of Heisenberg and the problem of correlationism as the limit of objective cognition in which the subject is missing, (2) quantum non-causality and OOO's aesthetic agent theory of Sensual Objects derived from it, and (3) the self-contradiction of OOO's borrowing of the confusing theories of ‘incompatible quantum determinism and non-determinism' as one of the theories of Philosophical Realism. Furthermore, linking the theory of 'object's unique properties' as a central argument of OOO with the 'relational interpretation of quantum mechanics', which has emerged since the 1990s, is likely to narrow Harmon's position on object-oriented ontology, which claims independent and unique properties of objects. New materialism, speculative realism, and Graham Harman's ‘object-oriented ontology' are of great significance in that they call for a new reflection on the conventional view of ‘human-subject' and ‘thing-object'. OOO uses the word object in the sense that humans, who have been the subject, are also seen as objects. However, rather than the other, the object, I propose to use a new term, “sobject,” which is a synthesis of subject and object, including all subjective beings, also including humans. Until the modern era, the Eastern and Western academic traditions started from different foundations and have followed their own paths, but as we have seen in the discussion so far, we have reached a point in history where it is possible to cross-reference, subtract, and meld the two to some extent. For this reason, if the disciplines of the two camps do not remain confined to their own worlds and carry out the process of cross-referencing, fusion, and reinterpretation well, they will make greater progress in the future. In this regard, the comparative review of modern physics and East Asian ancient thoughts on speculative realism through de-anthropocentrism conducted in this article will serve as an external reference for the interconnected reinterpretation of East Asian ancient thoughts and modern physics that I will write as a book.
