Abstract

This paper investigates the ontological turn in contemporary Western philosophy —specifically the emergence of Speculative Realism and New Materialism—and offers a comparative analysis with East Asian metaphysical traditions, focusing on Korean philosophy’s unique contribution to ecological ontology. As contemporary Western thought increasingly turns to non-anthropocentric frameworks in response to global crises such as climate change, thinkers in these movements have emphasized flat ontology, the agency of nonhuman actors, and the vibrant materiality of existence. However, these concepts are not entirely unprecedented. Elements of this ontological revision resonate strongly with East Asian cosmologies, particularly in their relational and dynamic understanding of being. Building upon the intercultural comparative work of Leah Kalmanson—who examined the correlation between Chinese Neo-Confucian concepts such as Li (principle) and Qi (vital force) with new ontological trends in the West—this paper moves beyond her Sino-centric framing to highlight the overlooked philosophical resources within Korean intellectual history. Specifically, the 18th-century Korean philosopher Hong Dae-yong articulated a sophisticated metaphysical vision through his Qi-based philosophy, emphasizing the concept of Inmulgyun (equivalence between humans and nonhumans), the rejection of hierarchical dualisms, and a relational ethics that challenges both strong and weak forms of anthropocentrism. The study argues that Hong’s ecological and ontological vision—rooted in Korean cultural and cosmological traditions such as the Samtaegeuk (triadic unity of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity), and informed by Confucian, Taoist, and indigenous thought—provides a fertile alternative to Western paradigms. His ideas not only anticipated key concerns in speculative realism and new materialism, but also surpass them by grounding metaphysical speculation in lived ethical practices and affective attunement with nature. By engaging in a cross-cultural philosophical dialogue, this paper asserts the urgency of what may be called a “cross-cultural turn” in ontology. Korean philosophy, particularly its deeply embedded ecological orientation and critique of subject-object dualism, has the potential to significantly enrich contemporary efforts toward a planetary ethics. In an era defined by the Anthropocene, Korean ecological ontology invites a renewed philosophical attention to the relational being, mutual resonance between humans and nonhumans, and the practical cultivation of life-affirming coexistence.
