A Study on Oversea Cases of Sexual Harassment Prevention Training and Policies in the Dance World

Sexual harassment in the dance world has finally come to the surface in the wake of the MeToo movement although there was no outpouring of allegations in dance when compared to other industries and arts fields. Faced with the necessity of a dance-specific guideline for preventing and addressing sexual harassment, this article examined the cases of sexual harassment training and policies in dance, focusing on higher education and professional contexts in Western Europe and North America. It contextualized the reasons of silence about sexual harassment in the dance world and delved into its guidelines within dance professional and higher education institutions. Based on the result, we suggested conducting a survey into sexual harassment in the dance world; reviewing the existing guidelines in light of the dance-specific circumstances; gaining credibility to take concerns seriously and make quick and proper responses; offering sexual harassment prevention training opportunities to all; and decentralizing a male-dominated power structure.
