Abstract

This study analyzes Stendhal’s unfinished play Letellier, focusing on his critique of political censorship, artistic control, and the intellectual climate of the Napoleonic era. In a time when Napoleon used the press and the arts as tools of propaganda and social control, Letellier emerges as a satirical play resisting such oppression. Unable to criticize Napoleon directly, Stendhal employs Letellier as his surrogate to expose the hypocrisy of power and the manipulation of public opinion. In the play, Letellier symbolizes authoritarian politics and religious authority, while his counterpart, Chapelle, represents Enlightenment ideals of truth and freedom. Through the satire of anti-Enlightenment figures such as Geoffroy, Chateaubriand, Bonald, Stendhal condemns the intellectuals of his time who submitted to tyranny and clerical dominance. Drawing on Voltaire’s anti-clerical and anti-authoritarian thought, he attacks the hypocrisy of the Jesuits and the Catholic Church. In shaping his characters, Stendhal blends real historical figures with autobiographical elements, turning the play into an experimental attempt to respond to political reality through art. Ultimately, Letellier stands as an early endeavor by Stendhal to extend literature beyond aesthetics into the realm of social critique, forming a crucial ideological foundation for his later novels.
