Abstract

According to Aristotle’s Poetics, a work must be completed in itself, and have a beginning, a middle and an ending. If the beginning of the novel is essential as a meeting place that connects the desires of the writing and the expectations of the reading, what is more essential in genre theory is the mystery in finish. Stendhal’s work is particularly characterized by the ending way. In the three completed novels, Armance, Le Rouge et le Noir, La Chartruse de Parme, when the heroes know perfect happiness after overcoming the social-psychological barriers, -it is the first end-, another story begins very rapidly to reach the second end. It is tragic, since the separation and the death of the main characters follow one another. A novel can never surprise us by ending unexpectedly. However, the description of the death of heroes is special : the moment of death coincides with the discovery of happiness and love. Concerning unfinished works, all failures are not equivalent, the reason for this is numerous. One might wonder if the interruption and incompleteness are not constants Stendhalian genius, because the reasons for the abandonment informed by the author are not justified. We wanted to see another deeper reason : incompletion by voluntary interruption decided by author. If we recall the childhood episode before the death of his mother, when he approaches to describe the moment of happiness, he succumbs to the literary fiasco. The inability to describe the moment of happiness and the failure to complete a work therefor would come from Stendhal’s psychological cause. However, the rapid resolution and incompleteness invite us to seek a modern way of reading the literature : the open work and participation of the reader. Stendhal’s work spawns radically new and modern ways because incompletion allows the reader to participate actively by calling incessantly to his imagination. The end should not be a conclusion.
