Abstract

False and manipulated information in political news threatens social safety by causing cognitive confusion among citizens and provoking socially unlawful and extreme behavior. This study reveals that to prevent the harm caused by false and manipulated news, citizens who receive, distribute, and produce news information need to strengthen their media literacy skills, which include careful verification of content and assessment of the credibility of information sources. Specifically, the study identified four attitudes and competencies that citizens should cultivate through media literacy education. First, they should analyze the source, intent, and truthfulness of information, and critically understand the emotional appeal of political news through framing. Second, they should compare and evaluate diverse perspectives, adopt an open-minded attitude and balanced thinking, and acknowledge that information from their own political camp may contain errors. Third, when expressing opinions on online news, citizens should present evidence and debate instead of using hate speech or defamation. Fourth, citizens should be mindful of the limitations and risks of algorithmically driven social media information and cultivate digital citizenship that values truth, respect, responsibility, and the public interest.
