Abstract
This paper proposes a new research approach in logic and a mode of learning designed to cultivate computational and mathematical thinking in today’s context, where artificial intelligence and automation permeate society. In particular, it focuses on two aims: as an interdisciplinary research topic, the analysis of artificial (formal) languages of logic; and the development of creative capacity through the powers of abstraction characteristic of logic. (1) With respect to interdisciplinary analyses of artificial languages, while working within the first-order language of elementary logic, we investigate the abstract analysis of concepts expressed by predicates and of purely logical expressions—i.e., sentential operators—in terms of sets and functions, and we delineate the limits of such analyses. Building on this, students examine the limits that arise when thought is represented in computable form, and study the paradoxes and foundational problems treated in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century logic, philosophy of language, mathematics, and computer science. (2) We further aim to extract, across distinct systems—such as logic, set theory, and electrical circuits—their structural isomorphisms as algebraic structures. Through these structural isomorphisms, we identify translation correspondences that carry an expression in one system into an expression in another without structural alteration. Thus learners not only express a single idea across multiple heterogeneous systems, but also learn to solve a problem in one system by leveraging knowledge from another, thereby developing flexible thinking and creative problem-solving that are not confined to any single disciplinary domain.
