Abstract
This study has searched a variety of Witold Lutoslawski’s serial technique in his musical works. This can be seen much different from that of Arnold Schoenberg’s style. While the serial techniques of Viennese school can be seen that of Schoenberg’s style which has been developed from tonal to atonal music, and finally forwarded to twelve-tone row; the serial techniques of Lutoslawski’s style which has been developed from the twelve-tone row to the atonal music, and finally forwarded to the tonal/modal music, can be said the fundamental differences of the two composers’ musical basis. The serial works of Lutoslawski can be said different from that of Viennese school because he uses a variety of musical styles in all over the music history including Viennese style; in that Lutoslawski uses not only Viennese style, but also traditional, augmented, and/or altered serial techniques in his many works. Some findings organized in Lutoslawski’s various serial techniques are as followed:Firstly, to use traditional serial techniques in which he uses a symmetric inversion of the specific interval relationship, or uses a symmetric key relationship of the harmonic language of traditional tonal music. Secondly, to use various chord relationships in which he uses twelve notes made out of the numbers and the shapes of interval, and out of classifying the massive chords. Thirdly, to use specific intervals and varied serial techniques in which he uses specific scale with making the fundamental tone-row horizontally and vertically and then making its altered tone-row. Lastly, to use augmented serial techniques in which he uses in the form of expansion or reduction, within restriction to twelve notes in the number of tone-row suitable for the character of works. All of these findings in this study can be named a New Serial Music, considering from his musical historic point of view. Through analyzing his works, Lutoslawski’s serial techniques show that he is endowed with musical talent in that he has applied his wide range of views on the trend of music history and various elements of musical style to the serial music.
