Abstract
The purpose of this article is to study how Eisler perceived and manipulated a serial technique in one of his early serial works, Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 6 (1924). Although this piece is entitled the second piano sonata, it is written in a form of variation. A given prime form of the piece is taken from an initial measure, and evolves through different partitions, set classes, rhythm, figure, texture, and melodic contours over the course of the piece. Eisler seems to seek a transformations rather than exact repetitions of the motif as the piece closes. The manipulations of the serial technique Eisler involved in this piece illustrate that he considered it as a way of expressing an extreme chromaticism, not an end in itself.
