Abstract
Partitioning is a way of segmenting a tone row into smaller pitch sets while still accounting forall twelve pitches. Beginning with Milton Babbitt, the significance of partitioning in serial work hasbeen discussed by many scholars using multifaceted approaches since partitioning structureshorizontal, vertical, and further integrative dimensions of serial works. In Schoenberg’s mature serial works, hexachordal partition, frequently associated withinversional combinatoriality, is used to imply a sense of harmonic motion, thus contributing to asystematic coherence of musical events. The partitioning of a twelve-tone row brings out setclasses that are key components of the row structure, as in Webern’s derived row. The method of parsing a prime form of the row becomes integral to each work through itsinterrelation with the motive, phrase, passage, and theme. Secondary sets, whose elements may notrepresent consecutive order number, also have a profound influence on many compositionaldimensions, from local harmony to long-range development.
