Abstract

The work consists of 12 easy miniatures conceived primarily as teaching compositions. The themes for the Folk Melodies had been taken from the collections of folk tunes made by Jerzy Olszewski. According to Witold Lutoslawski himself, the composition caused elaboration of a very distinctive style based on "Joing of simple diatonic motives with chromatic atonal counterpoints, and also with a non-functional, many-coloured capricious harmony". The texture of the pieces consists of superimposing of two lines : original diatonic tune (the prominent line) and the author's counterpoint (a kind of accompaniment). The formal structure correspond to those of t21he taken songs. I think, the analysis of the three first pieces are quite enough for making general conclusions. Witold Lutoslawski did not follow the method of using original folk music which Szymanowski and other musicians had practised before the World War II. Szymanowski was interested in the most original tunes, so the folklore from Kurpie and Podhale districts were of the greatest value for him. Witold Lutoslawski chose diatonic motifs which could be found in music of many regions. As well as the rhythm and the meter of the chosen songs are conventional. The melodies have periodic constructions. Such "uninteresting" tunes could represent an excellent material for the invention of new harmony. Though this work initiated Witold Lutoslawski's folk-music trend (of which the Concerto for Orchestra brought the full synthesis), here the composer continues looking for new sonorities as he did composing Paganini Variations (1941). Witold Lutoslawski does not break with functional harmony : every pieces has tonic at the end. But he breaks with primary functionality of the songs by introducing new functional and coloristic factors. His accompaniment tries to "trick" the listener. The composer's harmonies are conventional : Perfect fifth, triads, seventh chords, but their appearances and progressions are unexpected. After the analyses of the three first pieces I would like to indicate some innovations used in the Folk Melodies, which were elaborated and developed in subsequent Witold Lutoslawski's works : 1/Superimposition of a very few melodic lines lacking characteristic features in order to receive characteristic sound colours and rhythms, 2/Melodic ostinatos in a linear texture, 3/Superimposition of diatonic and chromatic systems, 4/Avoiding conventional functional harmony by using chromatic twelve-tone material, 5/Tritone- semitone "motional" juxtaposition of a tone a perfect fifth. As well, the common third relationship of two triads will be used by many polish and foreign composers : A. Schnittke's「Piano Concerto No. 1 (1960)」, H. M. Gorecki'「Beatus vir (1979)」, etc.
