Abstract

The purpose of this study is to see how the highly technical serialism and classic formalism can be interrelated, and mutually worked through one of Schoenberg’s mature serial works, String Quartet No. 3, Op. 30. Schoenberg chose the classical sonata rondo form as a formal scheme of the movement, wherein the isomorphic partitioning is served as a developmental method. He deliberately designs and manipulates a given tone row and its derived row forms, and partitions the rows into four instruments, having the same pitch order, set class, pitch interval, rhythm, figure when they are repeated in parallel. The isomorphic partitioning offers coherence and variety among thematic materials by informing the beginning of the main sections, and by presenting the set classes and pitch order that differ from its first statement. Consequently, the isomorphic partitioning becomes a primary factor that not only determines the formal scheme but also makes the classical sonata form coexist in the context of the serial technique.
