Abstract
This study aimed to classify the dimensions of social isolation among young adults and examine differences in perceptions of equality across the identified groups, in the context of growing societal concern over youth isolation as a structural problem. Data from the 2023 Korean Happiness Survey, conducted by the National Assembly Futures Institute, were used in this study, focusing on a sample of 4,626 young adults aged 19 to 39. A three-step Bolck-Croon-Hagenaars (BCH) approach was employed to classify social isolation based on both internal and external dimensions and to examine differences in perceptions of equality across the identified latent classes. The key findings are as follows: First, three distinct classes of youth social isolation were identified—non-isolated(60.07%), internally isolated(21.18%), and combined isolated(18.74%). Second, the combined isolation group was marked by socioeconomic vulnerability due to high unemployment and low education levels. Third, the non-isolated class demonstrated the highest level of perceived equality, while both the internally isolated and the combined isolated groups showed significantly lower levels. The results of this study highlight that social isolation among young adults stems from multiple dimensions of social isolation, and that their perceptions of equality can consequently be affected. Therefore, future policy development should adopt tailored approaches that consider the specific characteristics of social isolation.
