한국 사회의 사회적 고립과 사회인구학적 특성

A study of Social Isolation and its Socio-demographic Characteristics in Korea

초록

이 연구는 한국 사회에서 쟁점이 되고 있는 사회적 고립의 특성을 파악하기 위해 사회적 고립의 다차원성에 초점을 맞추어 고립의 수준을 차원별로 살펴보고, 어떤 차원에서 어떤 특성을 가진 사람들이 고립되고 있는지를 분석하였다. 이 연구는 사회적 고립이 단순히 사회적 관계로부터 배제되는 것뿐 아니라, 삶에 필요한 자원의 유형 별로 생활, 경제적, 정서적 차원에서 다차원적으로 경험하는 현상이라는 논의에서 출발한다. 개인이 속한 집단의 특성에 따라 차원별로 각기 다른 수준의 사회적고립을 경험할 수 있다는 것을 보여주고, 또한 차원 별로 사회적 고립에 빠지기 쉬운 집단의 특성을 제시함으로써 사회적 고립의 다차원성과 사회적 요인에 관해 논의하고자 했다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 2009년부터 2017년까지의 다섯 번의 통계청 <사회조사> 자료를 활용하여 13세 이상, 163,332명의 전체 인구집단을 분석했다. 사회적 고립을세 가지 차원으로 나누고 이항 로지스틱 과 순서형 로지스틱 분석을 시행해 사회인구학적 특성으로 각 차원에서의 고립 여부와 고립의 중충성을 분석했다. 분석 결과첫째, 응답자들의 사회적 고립 수준이 차원 별로 다양하게 나타났고, 둘째, 고립의차원 별 요인의 경우, 나이가 많고 이혼 혹은 사별을 경험했으며 가구원 수가 적은사람이 생활 차원의 고립을 경험할 위험이 가장 컸고, 소득이 낮은 사람이 경제적고립을 경험할 위험이 가장 컸으며, 학력 수준이 낮으며 경제 활동을 하지 않는 남성이 정서적 고립에 빠질 위험이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 이 연구는사회적 고립의 차원에 따라 위험군이 다를 수 있으며, 1인 가구나 노인층에 집중된 사회적 고립의 분석을 보다 다양한 집단이 경험할 수 있는 다차원적인 문제로 인식하고, 차원별로 해당 차원의 고립에 노출된 집단의 특성을 고려하여 정책적으로 지원하는 것이 필요함을 논의했다.

Abstract

This study attempts to understand the multidimensionality of the social isolation in the Korean society, and examine the characteristics of the people who are vulnerable to such isolation. We start from defining social isolation not only as an exclusion from social relations, but also as the lack of required resources in daily life, economic, and emotional dimensions. Furthermore, we contend that the risk of falling into social isolation of each dimension is different in term of the socio-demographic characteristics of an individual. We utilize the sample of 163,332 individuals from the pooled data of 2009-2017 <Social Survey>. As suggested in the previous studies, social isolation was divided into daily life, economic, and emotional dimensions, and the probability of being isolated in each dimension was predicted through logit regression model. Furthermore, the number of isolated dimensions was predicted using ordered logit regression model. As a result, the levels of social isolation were different across the three dimensions. Those prone to falling in isolation on the daily life dimension were ones who were old, divorced/bereaved, living with fewer family members. Those under the highest risk of experience isolation in the economic dimension were those of low-income, while those under the risk of emotional isolation were low-educated, unemployed male. In conclusion, this study reports that the risk group differs according to the dimension of social isolation. Therefore, we claim that social isolation should be considered not only as an issue of one-person household or the elderly group, but also as a potential problem that diverse group might experience. In addition, as different people are at risk of separate dimensions of social isolation, different policy measures are required to prevent and resolve such isolation
