사회자본이 청년의 사회적 고립감에 미치는 영향: 취업여부 비교를 통한 종단연구

초록

본 연구의 목적은 사회자본이 청년의 사회적 고립감에 미치는 영향을 종단적으로 분석하는 것이다. 사회자본은 신뢰, 호혜성, 네트워크로 보았다. 여기서 신뢰는 사회 전반에 대한 신뢰정도를, 호혜성은 필요한 경우 타인에게 도움을 줄 의향이 있는가를, 그리고 네트워크는 가족 또는 주변 사람들과의 사회관계성을 의미한다. 분석은 청년을 취업집단과 미취업집단으로 구분하여 비교·분석하였다. 미취업집단의 사회자본은 상대적으로 더 낮은 수준인가에 주목하였고, 이러한 취약한 사회자본은 청년의 고립감을 더욱 심화시키는가를 검증하였다. 분석을 위한 데이터는 2012년부터 2021년까지의 한국복지패널을 사용하였다. 최종분석 대상은 19세 이상 34세 이하의 청년 981명이다. 분석결과로 첫째, 미취업 청년의 사회적 고립감은 취업집단보다 통계적으로 유의하게 높은 수준으로 나타났다. 둘째, 미취업 청년의 사회자본으로서의 네트워크 점수는 취업집단보다 통계적으로 유의한 수준에서 상대적으로 낮게 나타났다. 셋째, 종단연구로서의 확률효과모형 패널회귀분석결과, 네트워크는 미취업 청년과 취업 청년 모두의 사회적 고립감에 부(-)적인 영향을 주었는데, 특히 미취업 청년에게 상대적으로 더 강한 영향을 주는 변수임이 확인되었다. 즉, 청년의 사회자본으로서의 네트워크 수준, 즉 가족 또는 주변 사람들과의 사회관계의 질이 두 집단 모두에게 사회적 고립감을 낮추는 역할을 하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 현상은 미취업 청년에게 더 강하게 확인되었다. 따라서, 청년의 사회자본으로서의 네트워크 수준을 높여줄 수 있는 청년 정책(예, 멘토링 프로그램)이, 특히 미취업집단을 중심으로 더욱 필요함을 시사한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine whether social capital affects social isolation in young adults in a longitudinal perspective. We assume social capital as being composed of social trust, reciprocity, and social network. Specifically, trust implies overall belief over the society, while reciprocity implying for willingness to may give help to the needy and network implying for quality of social networking with family members as well as others. Young adults were analyzed by comparison of between the employed and the unemployed. One of research questions was if social capital of the unemployed appeared to be lower than that of the employed. Further, if lower social capital had worsened their social isolation was another. We analyzed 981 young adults of between 18 and 34 years old from the Korean Welfare Panel Study data. One of major findings was that the unemployed young adults showed a higher level of social isolation being compared to that of the employed. Secondly, networks of the unemployed was lower than that of the employed. Thirdly, a random effect panel regression analysis showed that social network did negatively affect social isolation for both groups. That is, social relationship among family members as well as the people around, affects lower social isolation for both. Particularly noteworthy was the fact that the negative effects appeared to be more critical to the unemployed. This study suggests that more attention as well as more investment on building up social networking for young adults are required. Specifically, more policy attention (ex, mentoring programs) is required to strengthen social network of the unemployed young adults.
