Abstract

This study examined how using function words in self-expressive writing varies according to the emotional characteristics of student writers. We analyzed 680 self-expressive essays written by 136 first-year students at University A and surveyed their emotional traits. We extracted function words, including pronouns, dependent nouns, numerals, determiners, adverbs, interjections, particles, auxiliary verbs, and endings, from student writings. We analyzed the characteristics of function word usage based on the emotional traits reported in the survey. The results indicate that essays written by students with high levels of positive emotions frequently used connectives such as ‘and’ and the pronoun ‘we.’ Essays by students with high anxiety often featured auxiliary verbs like ‘seem’ and adverbs such as ‘really,’ ‘actually,’ and ‘truly.’ Essays by students experiencing high levels of loneliness included pronouns such as ‘she,’ ‘he,’ and ‘self,’ as well as general adverbs like ‘always,’ ‘daily,’ and ‘often.’ However, essays by students with high anger levels frequently employed dependent nouns such as ‘because’ and ‘thing.’ This study confirms that function words used in self-expressive writing can serve as indicators of student writers’ emotional states.
