國號 ‘高句麗’의 語義에 대한 일고찰

國號 ‘高句麗’의 語義에 대한 제 논의를 살펴보면, ‘고구려’를 ‘高’와 ‘句麗’로 나누어서 본 견해가 많다. 즉, ‘句麗’가 바탕이 되고 ‘高’를 수식어로 보는 견해이다. 본고에서도 東史寶鑑, 朝鮮輿勝覽, 旬五志, 通典에 수록된 고구려 기록을 통하여 ‘고구려’를 ‘高’와 ‘句麗’로 분리하여 高句麗의 語義를 제시하였다.먼저 高句麗의 ‘高’는 수식 기능으로 ‘大’(크-)의 동의어로 보는 견해와 ‘高上大首’를 의미하는 ‘수리’의 두 견해와는 달리, 고구려의 ‘高’는 단지 始祖인 朱蒙의 姓氏를 가리킨다고 보고자 한다. 高句麗의 國號는 高朱蒙이 句麗山의 이름을 얹어 高句麗라 했다는 기록으로 보아 ‘高(성씨)+句麗(탄생지)’로 이루어진 國名이다. 그러므로 고구려는 ‘高氏의 句麗(골)’ 즉, ‘高氏의 나라(國)’라는 의미에서 형성된 국명으로 해석하였다.
Abstract
A Study of the Meaning of Go-Gu-Rye as the Name of a Country Kim, Sang-yoon With the review of the meaning of Go-Gu-Rye as the name of a country, it is found that there are many discussions on dividing Go-Gu-Rye into Go and Gu-Rye. So to speak, it views ‘Gu-Rye’ as the ground and ‘Go’ as the modifier. This manuscript also indicates the meaning of Go-Gu-Rye with dividing Go-Gu-Rye into Go and Gu-Rye as viewing the record of Go-Gu-Rye written down in Dong-Sa-Bo-Gam, Cho-Sun-Hwan-Rye-Seung-Ram, Tong-Jun and Soon-Oh-Ji. Above all, it is considered that the ‘Go’ of Go-Gu-Rye just indicates the family name of the founder, Ju-Mong. It is different from such views that the modifier ‘Go’ of Go-Gu-Rye is a synonym for ‘Dae’ (Great-), and means ‘Go(High), Sang(Upper), Dae(Great), and Soo (Head).’ Thereby, with such a record as Go-Ju-Mong founded the country in Gu-Rye mountain, the name of Go-Gu-Rye is regarded as the name of a country made up with ‘Go(family name)’ and ‘Gu-Rye(local name)’. It is presented that the meaning of Go-Gu-Rye is the name of a country made up with the sense of ‘Gu-Rye(Gol) of Go family name’, in other words, ‘the country for Go family’. The point that ‘Gu-Rye’ means a castle town, therefore, Go-Gu-Rye indicates ‘Soo-Oop(Head town)’ and ‘Sang-Oop(Upper town)’ or ‘Dae-Sung(Great castle)’ and ‘Dae-Oop(Great town)’, further on, ‘Go-Sung(High castle)’ and ‘Dae-Sung(Great castle)’ should be reconsidered.
