Abstract

This study views the escalating care crisis in contemporary capitalist society as stemming from a dual separation: the economic division between production and reproduction, and the spatial division between the public and private spheres. It explores the potential for overcoming this crisis through the de-privatisation of care, focusing on the role of social housing in this process. Using the case of WeStay Byeollae, a cooperative social housing model located in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, the study examines how shared spaces and participatory governance structures can shift care from an individual responsibility to a collective social obligation. As an experimental model of cooperative private rental housing, WeStay Byeollae facilitates the commoning of care through resident-led design, management, and cooperative activities in various communal spaces. This research demonstrates that such housing models can dismantle the economic and spatial isolation of care imposed by capitalism and provide the physical and social infrastructure necessary for realizing caring democracy. In doing so, the study argues that social housing should not only be seen as a means of ensuring decommodified housing rights but also as a key infrastructure for enabling the de-privatisation of care.
