Abstract
This study examines whether different discussion methods (i.e., the existence and non-existence of a student facilitator and his/her role) affect the level of students' cognitive learning engagement and satisfaction in asynchronous online discussion. For this purpose, 98 college students were randomly divided into 3 groups adopting different discussion methods: a group with no facilitator, a group with an interaction facilitator, and a group with a task-performance facilitator. In each group, students were again divided into small groups and engaged in online discussions for 2 weeks. The results of the study show no statistically significant differences in students' learning satisfaction; however, in cognitive learning engagement, significant differences were found. The group with a task-performance facilitator showed the highest level of critical engagement. As for reproductive engagement, the two groups with a facilitator showed higher levels of engagement than the group with no facilitator. This study implies that in online discussions a task-performance facilitator is needed to promote participants' critical thinking while an interaction or task-performance facilitator can help promote their active participation at the level of reproductive engagement.
