Abstract
This study investigated whether there were significant differences in students’ learning achievement and cognitive load according to the type of hypertext navigation methods. 89 undergraduate students from a university in South Korea (15 males and 74 females) participated as subjects in this experiment. They were randomly assigned to two experimental groups (an alphabetical index group and a hierarchical structure map group). Each student was given 3 pretests of three components of working memory before taking their learning tasks. After completing these pretests, both groups were given a learning task regarding biology while having to perform a working memory suppression task appeared on the computer screen. Finally, the subjects were given a posttest after finishing their learning tasks. The research findings were as follows: First, when the subject’s prior knowledge was controlled, the group with the hierarchical structure map got higher scores of hypertext reading comprehension than the group with the alphabetical index. Second, the subjects with low capacities of both the central executive and the phonological loop achieved higher scores in the posttest when they used the hierarchical structure map than they used the alphabetical index navigation tool. Third, the subjects with low capacities of both the central executive and the phonological loop showed higher achievement of the working memory suppression tasks when they used the alphabetical index as a navigation tool in hypertext.
