Abstract
The purposes of this study were to explore the differences of cognitive learning engagement (CLE) and social presence (SP) by the topics in online discussions and their effects to test scores. Data were collected from two discussions by seventy-eight undergraduate students taking an asynchronous online course in an online university and analyzed through a rating scheme for CLE and SP. The analyses revealed several important aspects. First, the subjects' CLE and SP tended to be higher when they had higher levels of previous achievement and participated in more discussions. Second, subjects' CLE levels were higher in the convergent discussion, while the SP levels did not show any difference between two discussions. In addition, the CLE levels seemed higher when the subjects were older or majoring in continuing education. Third, CLE statistically predicted the variances of subjects' achievements, while SP failed. This study was noteworthy in that it provided empirical evidences of the effects of discussion topics to students' CLE and practical guidances to online practitioners.
