온라인 동시토론에서 토론 개요서 활용이 토론자의 인지적 참여 수준에 미치는 영향

초록

온라인 동시토론이 면대면 토론과 유사한 수준으로 토론학습의 효과를 높일 것으로 기대되고 있다. 그러나 이 토론은 학습자의 적극적 참여를 유발하는 데 여전히 전략적 및 기술적 어려움을 해소하지 못하고 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서 연구자들은 토론자에게 토론 전에 토론 개요서를 작성토록 함으로써 토론 참여의 집중도와 내용의 충실도를 높이려는 시도를 하고 있다. 이 연구는 온라인 동시토론에서 학습자가 토론 개요서를 활용하면 토론의 인지적 참여 수준이 높아는지를 실험적으로 검증해 보고자 수행되었다. 대학생 68명이 온라인 동시토론에서 토론 개요서를 작성하여 토론에 참여하는 집단(실험집단)과 그것을 활용하지 않고 토론에 참여하는 집단(통제집단)에 각각 34명씩 무선 배정되었다. 실험은 한 주에 50분씩 3주 동안 수행되었으며, 토론 직후에 Lee(2003)가 개발한 온라인 학습의 인지적 참여분석체제에 따라 토론내용이 분석되었다. 그 결과는 토론 개요서를 활용한 집단이 토론 개요서를 활용하지 않은 집단보다 인지적 참여 수준이 높은 비판적 참여에서 유의미한 차이로 높게 나타났고, 반면에 인지적 참여 수준이 낮은 비생산적 참여에는 이와 정반대로 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이런 결과는 온라인 동시토론에서 토론 개요서를 활용하면 토론에 참여하는 학습자의 인지적 수준을 높일 수 있음을 시사한다.

Abstract

It is expected that an effect of online synchronous discussions improves to the extent of the level of face to face discussion results. However, the synchronous discussion has many strategic problems as well as technical ones on inducing discussants' active engagement during discussion. Researchers attempt to conduct studies about effects on which discussants write discussion outlines about the topic before doing discussion, and use them during discussion. This study was to investigate an effect of writing and using discussion outlines on the degree of discussants' cognitive engagement in an online synchronous discussion. Subjects participated in this study were 68 college students, who are enrolled in a medium sized national university, located in a rural area southeast far a way about 250㎞ from Seoul, Korea. They were randomly assigned to the experimental group, which used discussion outlines, and the control group, which unused them, respectively. Students participated in the discussion sessions during three weeks for 50 minutes a week. Right after the final session, discussion results were analyzed with the participation analytic system adapted by Lee(2003). Results showed that the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group in the degree of the critical participation during discussion, which is the highest in the cognitive engagement. Whereas the right opposite result was yielded in the degree of unproductive participation, which is the lowest. This suggests that when students participating in discussion write and use the discussion outlines, the degree of their cognitive engagement can be improved during online synchronous discussion.
