Abstract

There has been a long debate on the role of the government for personal happiness. There are arguments in favor of the claims for government intervention and in favor of individual freedom. The government’s role for individual’s happiness can exist various types in the middle of the area rather than being divided into dichotomy. This study aims to extract a statement pertaining to specific government policies on previous research findings on happiness and the role of government. This analysis using Q-methodology confirms that two intermediate types of government’s role may exist between judgment-type government and parent-type government. The “Aunt-style” government prefers public policies, such as providing information rather than receiving the government’s active intervention. The “Uncle-style” government is negative about policy intervention, but indirect support, such as strengthening the need for social safety net. Recognizing the types of recognition for happiness and the role of government as a centrist political philosophy can be categorized into “Aunt-style” government and “Uncle-style” government.
