Abstract

The television drama <Sang-eo(Shark)> is a melodrama that embodies the idea of solving historical and political pathologies with the dramatic imagination of revenge and reasoning techniques, along with the diagnosis that vested interests who control power are the causes of political, economic, social, and cultural pathology. In particular, Cheon Yeong-bo, who lived as Jo Sang-guk, an independence activist, succeeded in leading the critical understanding and reflection of history through self-deception, brutality, and revenge and truth-finding of Han Yi-su, who hid his identity as a Korean-Japanese Kim Jun. Accordingly, this study analyzed the conflict between Cheon Young-bo(Jo Sang-guk), a symbolic figure of the older generation who is not free from historical mistakes, and Han Yi-su(Kim Jun), a symbolic figure of the younger generation who tries to correct the fabricated history. The dramatic imagination of the television drama Shark analyzed through this study is as follows. Han Yi-soo’s revenge narrative, which disguised himself as a Korean-Japanese businessman Kim Jun, led to the political misdeeds that failed to properly clean up the remnants of Japanese colonial era, which led to the deepening of the pathological phenomenon of Korean independence activist Jo Sang-guk. In conclusion, <Sang-eo(Shark)> is a television drama that seeks a poetic definition of the problematic reality of not being able to move forward as political misdeeds that failed to properly clean up the remnants of Japanese colonial era become a deep-rooted evil, deepening the frustration and despair of the younger generation.
