텔레비전드라마에서의 5·18광주민주화운동 재현 양상 -<모래시계>와 <제5공화국>을 중심으로-

Abstract

Television dramas are visual arts that can create emotional repercussions through symbolic and figurative devices beyond reproduction and drive political reflection on the tragedy of modern history. From this perspective, this study considered the reproduction of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, focusing on the melodrama Sand Clock and the political drama The Fifth Republic. As a result, Sand Clock confirmed that the episode of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement was a melodrama focused on the tragedy of an individual caught up in a turbulent history rather than the state violence committed by the new military coup forces. And I could see that Sand Clock is mythical as a de-politicized parol, including compassion for youth who lived in turbulent times. On the other hand, The Fifth Republic confirmed that it was a political drama that led to primary imagination of fiction by dramatically restructuring and presenting historical records to recreate the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. And it was shown that The Fifth Republic mourned Gwangju citizens who were killed in the massacre committed by the new military coup forces by cross-editing the dramatic reenactment and historical records, and drove the historical significance of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement. In conclusion, television dramas raised the need to actively exercise their imagination of political and historical tragedies in order to properly perform their role as a cultural public forum at an emotional level.
