Abstract
『Samguk Yusa』 is the oldest book that preserves the ancient stories of the Korean people along with 『Samguksagi』. However, 『Samguk Yusa』 is not simply a history book but has a rich literary character. Therefore, it should be seen that the value of text expansion is much higher in terms of content development than 『Samguksagi』. This paper focused on the literary value of 『Samguk Yusa』 and compared the myth of Dangun with India’s founding mythology. As a result of comparative analysis, Dangun was a mixed-race child born of the god of heaven and the native of the earth, just like Bharata, the ancestor of Indian people. However, while Dangun, the ancestor of the Korean people, is a direct descendant of Indra, the heavenly emperor Jeseok, Bharata, the ancestor of India, is a direct descendant of another god. Since Indra, the heavenly emperor Jaeseok was the god who ruled the Indian subcontinent, when he sent his son Hwanung to the Korean Peninsula, he descended him under shindansu, the holy sandal tree, along with Indian culture. It seems that this is why the shindansu, the sacred sandal tree, became important, and his son was given the name Dangun. Due to this background, later Buddhist cultural exchanges led to the emergence of the Korean kingdom of Kaya. Considering the explanations of Kim Pusik and Il-yeon that King Suro, the founder of the Kaya kingdom, was a stranger who brought a culture similar to an unfamiliar festival from an unknown place, it is very likely that King Suro was an Indian prince from a literary point of view. Perhaps Ilyeon was attempting a post-China of the Korean peninsula through the story of India for reducing the Yuan Dynasty intervention in Korea. In 『Samguk Yusa』』, various Indian elements appear in various aspects, such as names of people, places and Buddhism terminologies , so for an in-depth reading of 『Samguk Yusa』, it is necessary to conduct comparative studies in various ways from the perspective of Indian culture.
