Abstract

The author of Chronicles uses his own unique genealogical writing format to record his extensive genealogy in 1 Chronicles 1-9. In general, the breadth of a genealogy is used of the relationship terms such as sons, sons of, and his son to represent ‘A Radial Genealogy’(A Horizontal Genealogy), and the depth of a genealogy is used bagat, son, and his son to represent ‘A Direct Genealogy’(A Vertical Genealogy). The genealogy of the descendants of the high priest ‘Aaron’(1 Chr 6:1-15 [MT 5:27-41]) uses ‘The Top-down Direct Genealogical Record Format’ “A ‘begat’ B” to indicate the relationship between ‘father’(A) and ‘son’(B), while the genealogy of the ‘the singers’ (genealogy(1 Chr 6:31-47 [MT 6:16-32]) uses ‘The Bottom-Up Direct Genealogical Record Format’ “B is A’s ‘son’”. However, the genealogy of the ‘Levites’(1 Chr 6:16-30 [MT 6:1-15]) presents a challenge in interpreting the genealogy because it also uses ‘The Radial Genealogical Record Format’ in addition to “A’s ‘son’ is B”, ‘The Top-down Direct Genealogical Record Format’. Here, I explained the difficulty in interpreting the genealogy, his son through the genealogy of the family of ‘Samuel’ in 1 Chronicles 6:22-28 (MT 6:7-13). The genealogy of the family of ‘Samuel’(1 Chronicles 6:22-28 [MT 6:7-13]) is up to 21 generations if listed only as ‘The Top-down Direct Genealogy’ alone, but a minimum of 12 generations if listed as ‘The Radial Genealogy’ with ‘The Top-down Direct Genealogy’ in comparison to the parallel texts(Ex 6:24; 1 Sam 1:1, 8:2; 1 Chr 6:26 [MT 6:11]). In particular, one of the genealogical forms employed by the Chronicler—the relational term his son—clearly indicates that Samuel, through the naming of his father Elkanah, is situated within the lineage of the Kohathites, descendants of Levi’s second son. Through this genealogical linkage, the Chronicler not only underscores that Samuel originally belonged to the tribe of Levi, but also seeks to establish the legitimacy of his two sons, Joel and Abijah, as rightful members of the Levitical line.
