Abstract
The genealogies of 1 Chronicles 1–9 have long been marginalized in Old Testament scholarship, often regarded as mere lists of names. However, recent studies have highlighted their theological and literary significance. This study examines how the Chronicler, within the historical context of the post-exilic community in the late Persian period, employed the genealogies to shape the identity of the community. Focusing on the Chronicler’s perspective on “All Israel”, the study analyzes the structure and content of these genealogies. This study demonstrates that the genealogies were shaped according to ancient Near Eastern traditions and utilized both linear and segmented forms to legitimize internal order and authority within the community. Moreover, the emphasis on the tribes of Judah, Levi, and Benjamin reflects the Chronicler’s community, political, cultic, and theological perspectives. Through these genealogies, the Chronicler redefines the multifaceted character of “All Israel” in terms of these four perspectives. Ultimately, this study argues that the genealogies serve not merely as historical records but as a hermeneutical introduction to the entire book of Chronicles. They function as a theological and literary tool that helps the post-exilic community re-establish its identity as the people of God in a new historical reality.
