Abstract
This article deals with the theological meanings and function of the lists of the Levitical singers in 1 Chronicles 6:31-43. The lists of the Levitical singers in 1 Chronicles 6:31-47 is connected to the contents in 1 Chronicles 15 firstly, and then secondly to 1 Chronicles 16, 25. This genealogies of the Levitical singers match the earliest days of the order of singers in David’s era. The chronicler intentionally placed the genealogies of the Levitical singers between priestly lists in 1 Chronicles 6:31-47 in line with the fact that the Hemanites have the majority in the twenty-four divisions of Levitical singers in 1 Chronicles 25. Although the uniqueness of priestly ministry and their own lineage are situated in the front line, the Levites from 1 Chronicles 23, 25-27 function within the formal succession ceremony (chaps. 28-29) to display David’s careful preparation for Solomon’s accession. Thus, the priests’ and Levites’ genealogy in 1 Chronicles 6 corresponds precisely to the function of 1 Chronicles 23-27. The genealogies of three men named Heman, Asaph, and Ethan do not emphasizes that they are the focal persons in charge of singing ministry, but that David appoints them as singers. The text from 1 Chronicles 6:31-47 shows a summary of two events in the life of David. It signals the beginning of priestly and choir ministry in advance before the temple of the YHWH was built for the centralization of worship in Jerusalem. 1 Chronicles 6:31-32 implies that Levites minister regularly both before the ark and in the high places at Gibeon after the transfer of the ark to Jerusalem but Levitical ministry eventually was also centralized in Jerusalem after the cen- sus and David’s purchase of the threshing floor of Ornan.
