Abstract
This paper seeks to demonstrate the possibility that Paul was an individual who actually underwent crucifixion yet survived, by reexamining the relevant clues embedded in his letters. In particular, 1 Corinthians 1:13 can be read as a passage that implicitly suggests Paul himself had been crucified. It is conceivable that the “Pauline faction” within the first-century Corinthian church revered the crucified Paul as a great apostle alongside Jesus. Indeed, throughout early Christian history, it was not uncommon for apostles and believers to suffer crucifixion under Roman authority, and there exist ancient accounts of individuals who survived such executions. Therefore, the claim that Paul was crucified but lived through the ordeal carries a degree of historical plausibility. The figure of “Paul the Crucified” proposed in this study may be understood as an authentic embodiment of discipleship—one who did not evade but rather realized in his own life Jesus’ injunction to “take up the cross.”
