Abstract

This study analyzes the genealogy of the Levites in 1 Chronicles 6:1-81 to uncover the theological and historical messages that the Chronicler intended to convey. By placing the Levites at the center of Israel’s entire genealogy, the Chronicler emphasizes "proper worship performed by proper cultic personnel at the proper cultic place." To illustrate this, the Chronicler presents the genealogy of the Levites, including that of the Aaronite priests, tracing it from the patriarchal era to the exile. In doing so, he highlights the legitimacy of the Aaronic priesthood not as something granted by royal appointment or selection, but as a divinely ordained office inherited from Aaron and preserved through hereditary succession. Furthermore, in introducing the genealogy and duties of the Levites, the Chronicler underscores that their responsibilities historically preceded the Temple, asserting that their duties remained valid even after the destruction of Solomon’s Temple. This argument legitimizes the continued role of the Levites in the Second Temple period, providing the foundation for the Second Temple's legitimacy as a proper cultic place. In other words, by performing their duties at the Second Temple, the Levites establish it as the house of God. The Chronicler emphasizes the Aaronite priesthood, originating from Kohath of the tribe of Levi, as the cultic center of Israel. The role of this cultic center is to unify all the tribes of Israel into a single worshiping community, which is achieved by structuring the territorial records of the Levites to establish relationships between all the tribes of Israel and the Levites. This study highlights that the genealogy of the Levites is not merely a record of lineage but a theological (or cultic) construct that connects all the tribes of Israel into a cultic community. The Levitical duties formed the group as one cultic community beyond a simple territorial association.
