Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the types and distribution of student-generated questions(SGQs) produced by high school students and to examine their relationships with reading experiences, including reading amount, frequency, and attitude. Participants were 108 first-year students at two high schools in Gyeonggi Province who read a philosophical passage, generated questions, and completed a reading-related survey. A total of 290 questions were classified into six categories—vocabulary, comprehension, inference, application/extension, analysis, and evaluation—based on existing frameworks and previous studies. The results showed that application/extension(27.24%) and comprehension(24.48%) questions were most frequent, followed by vocabulary(18.62%), analysis(13.79%), evaluation(10.7%), and inference(5.17%) questions. Students mainly focused on confirming explicit textual content or linking it to real contexts, while 36.7% of application/extension questions remained at a superficial level, indicating a scarcity of higher-order thinking questions. Correlational analyses revealed significant positive relationships between reading amount, frequency, and attitude and the quality of questions, with reading attitude showing the strongest correlation. Based on these findings, the study proposes educational strategies to foster higher-quality questioning and suggests directions for future research.
