Abstract
This study approaches the formation of Saroguk by analyzing the distribution patterns of burials and settlement remains in the Gyeongju area during the Early Iron Age, and interpreting them from the perspectives of the local polity theory and ritual theory. From the perspective of the local polity theory, burials and settlement remains in the Gyeongju region during the Early Iron Age were established in both the central and pe- ripheral areas of Gyeongju around the 2nd century BCE. This suggests that Saroguk was formed across most of the Gyeongju Basin. In particular, settlement remains identified at sites such as Sajung-dong, Gyodong, and Bukmun-ro provide important implications. It is understood that, even in the early stage of Saroguk, settlements across the Gyeongju region formed an interconnected network. From the ritual perspective, the dispersed nature of burials and settlements, along with the likelihood of ethnically diverse communities, suggests that ritual facilities were used as a means to strengthen social cohesion. Representative examples include circular ritual fea- tures (hwan-gu) found at sites such as Hwacheon-ri in the western (southern) district, as well as Jukdong-ri in the southeastern Dongcheon River basin and the Ulsan Jungsan Sports Town site. In particular, major settlements are understood as complex spaces equipped with residential areas, burial grounds, ritual facilities, and production sites. Sites that meet these conditions include Jukdong-ri and Jungsan-ri in the southeastern Dongcheon basin. Based on the archaeological data available to date, An’gye-ri in the northern district and the Tap-dong area in the urban–basin district may also be considered major settlements. In conclusion, Saroguk in its early stage appears to have been a loosely integrated confederation of settlements. Its relatively weak level of integration was compensated for through ritual practices that reinforced community cohesion, and over time, integration among settlements gradually strengthened.
