Abstract

Within the data-based instruction (DBI) framework, which has shown effective for students with learning difficulties, the processes of data-based decision-making (DBDM) and instructional changes hold particular significance. These processes involve teachers assessing whether the current instruction effectively supports individual students, using student progress monitoring data, and making necessary modifications to better support student learning. The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive explanation of the implementation of DBDM and instructional changes with students with learning difficulties. To achieve this goal, we first outlined the general principles and procedures of DBDM and instructional changes. In doing so, we described a professional development program conducted in the United States, which served as the source of data for this study. Second, we selected exemplary cases of special education teachers who participated in the program, along with their students with intensive writing needs. Particularly, we sought to assess the effects of teachers‘ implementation of DBDM and instructional changes across various domains (complexity, behavior support, dosage, transfer) on students’ writing outcomes. We identified an improvement in students‘ writing skills following the implementation of DBDM and instructional changes. Given that limited attention has been paid to these procedures despite its significant importance, we discussed implications for research and practice surrounding the implementation of DBDM and instructional changes in schools.
