초록

A mother is a being who gives life; there is no such creature that was born without a mother. A mother is also a being who raises and sacrifices herself for her offspring. Thus, it is indeed one of the most important and fundamental words in our lives. In order to understand the polysemy of the Thai word “MAE (‘mother)”, I analyzed some examples of language used in practice from the Thai text corpus. As a result, I was able to discover that the meaning of “MAE” has been extensively broadened over time. After applying the prototypical meaning of “MAE” to Professor George Lakoff’s cognitive model, I found that the prototypical meaning of “MAE” consists of two models: “birth model” and “nurturance model.” This prototypical meaning became the basis for the other meaning extensions: under the birth model, the meaning extended to “woman,” “root” or “affiliation,” and under the nurturance model, it extended to “care‐giver,” “representative” or “main.” The finding that the relation between the extended and prototypical meanings of “MAE” can be traced, and that the way of extension assumes the form of a radial pattern, support the theory of cognitive linguistics.
