초록
This article investigates the mechanism that motivates the meaning extension of the polysemous word maa in Thai in comparison to oda in Korean in order to compare similarities and differences of the basic locomotion verbs in both languages and to understand the cognitive process of Thai and Korean speakers. In this study, I found that the polysemy of maa in Thai and oda in Korean has more similarities than differences. Their similarities mainly result from the ‘embodiment’. Embodiment is the direct bodily experiences of humans that give rise to a prototypical meaning in a word. In case of maa and oda, it means a movement towards a speaker or a reference point. The prototypical meaning subsequently becomes a foundation of meaning extension to more abstract, subjective and functional ones. In addition, another interesting phenomenon observed is that maa and oda have very similar types of aspectual meaning due to their grammaticalization. This study also supports the claim that even when the meaning extends to a very abstract meaning, such as aspectual meaning, it can still be traced back to the prototypical meaning via tracing the relationship between them.
