이 연구가 던지는 의문은 왜 어떤 사회에서는 자생적으로 만들어진 조직이 수 백 년을 넘는 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 안정적으로 생존하게 되는가 하는 것이다. 이에 대하여 이 연구가 제시하는 설명의 논리는 간단하다. 조직현상 자체는 생명이 길든 짧든 상관없이 다양한 사회구성원간의 거래･협력관계의 집합으로 구성된다. 따라서 이러한 거래･협력관계를 안정적으로 지속할 수 있는 메커니즘을 발전시킬 수 있다면 조직의 생명력은 길어질 수 있다는 것이다. 이러한 사실을 논증하기 위하여 이 연구는 크게 두 가지의 설명을 제시한다. 첫째는 수 십 년 또는 수 백 년 이상 안정적으로 작동하고 있는 조직을 대상으로 하여 이런 조직의 이면에서 일어나고 있는 거래･협력관계의 특성은 어떤 것인지를 분석하였다. 어떤 위험이 도사리고 있기에 조직이 거래･협력관계를 지속하지 못하고 단명하게 되는지, 그리고 조직이 거래･협력의 매개체, 즉 제도로 발전하기 위해서는 어떤 문제를 해결해야 하는지를 찾아내기 위해서다. 이 연구의 분석에 의하면 거래위험이 높은 자산(예: 경영능력, 역사유물, 권력)과 거래방법(비개인적 거래, 기부, 대리인위탁)에 수반되는 거래비용의 문제를 해결하는 것이 조직의 생명력을 유지하는데 필수적이다. 둘째, 거래･협력관계의 형성･유지를 가능하게 하는 방법에는 첫째, 개인의 특별한 능력에 의존하는 방법과 둘째, 그 사회가 발전시켜 온 공식･비공식의 제도들에 의존하는 방법이 있다. 그러나 특정한 개인의 능력에 의존할 때는 조직의 생명력이 짧을 수밖에 없다. 안정적인 제도에 기초하여 조직이 만들어지고 운영될 때 조직 역시 안정적으로 생명력을 유지할 수 있다. 특히 미국 사회와 같이 직업윤리와 행동윤리를 중시하는 비공식제도가 각 종의 사회제도에 깊이 침투해 있는 제도여건에서 조직이 만들어질 때 조직의 생존에 필요한 거래･협력관계 역시 안정적으로 지속될 수 있으며, 조직은 거래･협력을 매개하는 제도로서의 기능도 안정적으로 유지할 수 있다.
Abstract
The question this study asks is that how an organization does live nearly forever or for so long beyond several decades or centuries. The explanation this study offers is simple. Regardless of the longevities of organizations, organization itself is made up with the trade and cooperation among related members. Therefore if these trade and cooperation could be lasted and maintained in a stable manner, an organization would acquire a longer span of life and become an institution supporting the trade realized and lasted. This study offers two answers on the mechanism of institutionalization of organization. First, this study examined the characteristics of trade and cooperation which were generated within the centuries-long-lived organizations to find out the critical factors that determine the lifetime of an organization. According to the findings, the organization is a media and product of trade and cooperation. Therefore, to solve the transaction costs is the essential factor for survival which were located into a high-transaction-cost-assets (for examples, managerial capability or the power of management) and high-risk trading methods(for examples, impersonal trade, contribution, trade by an agent). Second, there are two methods which lower transaction cost and enable the trade stabilized and lasted longer. One is to depend on a person. The other is to depend on the formal and informal institutions. But an organization depending on a person’s potential ability can’t live long. It is institutional conditions; especially informal institutions that make the cooperation over generations possible and organization live longer. According to this study, the trade and cooperation required for the institutionalization of organization can be lasted long beyond centuries only when it has the bases of sound informal institutions such as business ethics and social norms embedded in mind and hibitualized in behavior.
