『중용』의 강함[强]에 대한 주희와 정약용의 해석

본 연구는 『중용(中庸)』 자로문강장(子路問强章)에 나오는 강함[强] 개념에 대한 주희와 정약용의 해석을 살펴보고, 그 차이가 무엇인지 살펴본 것이다. 주희에게 ‘자로문강장’의 강함이란 자로와 같은 보통의 자질의 사람들이 용감함[勇]으로 중용을 알고 행하는 데 힘씀으로써 ‘자신의 인욕의 사사로움을 이기는 것’을 이른다. 그는 ‘자로문강장’을 자로의 용감함을 주제로 하는 장으로 여기면서, 남방의 강함이나 북방의 강함이 남을 이기는 것을 강함으로 삼는 것에 반해 군자의 강함은 용감함으로 자기 자신을 이기는 것을 강함으로 삼는다고 보았다. 반면 정약용에게 ‘자로문강장’의 강함이란 중화(中和)를 ‘꾸준히 계속하게 하는 것[所以有常]’ 또는 ‘오래 지속하게 하는 것[所以持久]’을 이른다. ‘꾸준히 계속함[有常]’은 중용(中庸)의 용(庸)이다. 강함이 있어야만 ‘중화’를 꾸준히 계속하여 ‘중용’을 할 수 있고 따라서 군자라 할 수 있다. 주희와 정약용 모두 『중용』 ‘자로문강장’의 강함 개념을 중용을 행하는 것과 관련된 도덕적 개념으로 보지만, 두 사람이 생각한 강함은 매우 다르다. 주희에게 강함은 심성의 수양을 의미하지만, 다산에게 강함은 실천적 행사(行事)를 의미한다.
Abstract
This study elucidates on the meaning of gang (强) in the “Chapter on Jaro (子路) asking Confucius about gang”, Jungyong (中庸), by examining Zhu Xi’s interpretation and Jeong Yak-yong’s. Zhu Xi (朱熹, 1130-1200) interprets the term gang as overcoming one’s selfish interests; He regards the theme of “Chapter on Jaro asking Confucius about gang” as Jaro’s yong (勇) and holds that the gang of the South or of the North is to overcome the other people, but the gang of the exemplary person (君子) is to overcome one’s selfish interests. On the other hand, Jeong Yak-yong (丁若鏞, 1762-1836) takes the meaning of gang in the “Chapter on Jaro asking Confucius about gang” differently; He interprets the term gang in general as the way in which one can make it constant, and stresses ceaseless practice of junghwa (中和) in particular, because he holds that the practice of jungyong (中庸) is impossible unless one practice junghwa constantly. Both Zhu Xi and Jeong Yak-yong understands the term gang in the “Chapter on Jaro asking Confucius about gang” as the moral conceptions that is related closely with doing jungyong. However, these two scholars have different notions about gang; The former relates it to our self-cultivation, while the latter relates it to our practice.
