Abstract

This study was approached from the perspective of how to create a new collective memory or reproduce an inherent memorial memory to convey the meaning of a memorial space against designing and creating a memorial garden on a university campus as a background. This study proposes a methodology to derive the intrinsic value of memoriality in form by defining and concretizing the concept from the abstract meaning of memorialization, and the results are as follows. First, the memorial space should be given a sense of place based on the purpose of memorialization. It should be public and accommodating, with a sense of purposiveness and creativity, while considering its public domain character. Second, the meaning of memorialization must be represented in collective memory through social contexts and convey plural and layered concepts that accommodate the diversity of group members. To this end, memorial gardens should embody a sense of presence and continuity, and as cultural elements, they should have appropriate media and formats. Third, the memorial space is to create a realized space from abstracted language and concepts. Therefore, Simulacra theory was applied as a medium to materialize the abstract meaning of memorialization. In other words, the basic language extracted from the ‘value concept’ induced the ‘form concept’ through the generative language of Simulacra. Through this, design elements for formalization were extracted and reflected in the basic design. As an example of the linkage between conceptualization and design to realize a garden design, this study’s findings are significant. They provide a valuable design methodology for landscape and garden design that generates conceptual meanings from abstract meanings and induces a morphological approach.
